Weekly Reflection: Classroom Placement 2017-18 (05/03)

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Each spring we begin the process of building class lists for the following school year. At Marvista Elementary, we believe this important process needs to be done using a specific protocol that allows us to balance classes according to a set of criteria that creates the optimal teaching and learning environment for every child in our community.

Each classroom is a small community. We support the philosophy that classrooms need to be representative of the various social, academic and physical needs of students at Marvista Elementary. Our goal is to achieve a positive balance among these factors. Our commitment to our students and staff related to student placement are:

• Classes will be balanced by academic abilities and achievement
• Class size will be balanced according to other considerations such as social/emotional development, leadership skills, work habits and behaviors
• Classes will be balanced by gender across a grade elvel
• Class size will be balanced across grade levels

Staff members have been asked to refraim from discussions with parents regarding placement with a specific teacher for significant reasons. First, it is possible a specific teacher may not teach at the grade level expected. Staffing is determined by enrollment levels across the entire district, which may mean we gain or lose a teacher anytime up to the start of the school year. Second, experience has taught us that a parent’s input is most valuable when it focuses on the unique needs of a child rather than a parent’s perception of a particular teacher. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

An optional Student Placement Information Form is linked below for parents who wish to provide additional information to be considered by the Placement Team. These forms must be returned directly to the office by Friday, May 12th, 2017.

Please be assured our primary objective in this process is forming classes that are equitable and that meet the educational needs of all our students. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions regarding the placement process for the 2017-2018 school year.
